06 Invisible on screen share

On your screen. Not in the share.

Windows keeps two pictures of your screen: the one on your monitor, and the one it hands to anything that captures it. Promptly asks to be left out of the second — the same display-affinity setting protected video players use to stay out of screenshots. On a Mac, Promptly asks macOS to leave its window out of capture the same way.

Every plan, including Free · Windows 11, Windows 10 version 2004 or later, and macOS 13.5 or later

How it works

You see everything

Your monitor shows your desktop, your meeting app and Promptly's overlay, as normal.

Windows composes the capture separately

When Zoom, Meet, OBS or the Snipping Tool asks for the screen, Windows builds that frame on its own.

Promptly isn't in it

Its overlay and dictation pill are flagged WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE, so the capture shows whatever is behind them instead.

What makes it different

Not a trick, an OS feature

Display affinity is a documented Windows setting. Protected video players use it to keep their frames out of screenshots; Promptly uses it to keep your notes out of the call.

Every capture path

Screen shares, recordings and screenshots all get the same capture frame, so Promptly's overlay is absent from all of them: Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, Slack huddles, Discord, OBS, Loom and the Snipping Tool.

Why not a second window?

Any ordinary window shows up the moment you share your whole screen, and alt-tabbing is visible. Promptly is a layer the capture never receives.

Why not a notes bot?

Bots join the call with a name tag and announce the recording. Promptly listens through your own computer, so there's nothing to announce.

Private by design

Try it on the home page: press P and the page switches to what a screen share would capture — everything Promptly draws disappears.

Questions

Does this work when I share a single window instead of my whole screen?

Yes. Sharing one window never includes other windows, and sharing the whole screen uses the capture frame that leaves Promptly out.

Does it show up in recordings?

No. Recordings use the same capture frame as screen shares.

Does the Resume Tailor window hide too?

No — Resume Tailor is a regular window you'd use before the interview, so it shows in captures like any other app. Only the overlay (answers, teleprompter, notes) and the dictation pill are hidden.

Does it hide on a Mac too?

Yes. On macOS 13.5 and later Promptly asks macOS to leave its window out of every capture, the Mac's counterpart to display affinity. We test it against Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, OBS, QuickTime recordings and screenshots.
